Modern Coastal Vibe with Spotted Gum Deck in Yowie Bay, Sydney
This stunning outdoor decking and alfresco project for our client in Yowie Bay, Sydney NSW Australia, showcased beautiful Spotted Gum Timber against the pale grey panelled joinery and white weatherboard exterior of a Modern Coastal influenced home.
The Influence Behind the Outdoor Design
Owner, Anna Johnston, says of the outdoor alfresco space:
“We created this outdoor space to be an extension of the indoor living, bringing the outdoors in. It was important that we could watch our two girls while inside as well as enjoying the outdoor space as a family. We also wanted it to be a great space for entertaining that we could enjoy with friends while always keeping an eye on the kids” she said.
The Owners had the vision for their home in mind for a long time.
“We had always admired weatherboard homes, and a white weatherboard home was always our dream. We are from New Zealand and whenever we go there on holiday, we always drive around admiring all the weatherboard homes, they have so much character. We had renovated before, but this home was a new build so it was lovely being able to build our dream home” says Anna.
Anna had been collecting samples and creating mood boards for many years and the new home was an opportunity to bring her inspired ideas to life. Taking her ‘dream home’ ideas – drawn from TV shows such as Grand Designs, home magazines or online sites such as Pinterest and Houzz, Anna set about taking her favourite ideas and creating a practical environment and floor-plan that worked for her family.
The Amazing Team
#1 Decks Decking Team
The Modern Coastal theme outside was created by an amazing team, including Darren and Team from #1 Decks. Anna says of #1 Decks:
“We were really pleased with #1 Decks. Darren was always helpful and is very knowledgeable about all the different options of decking they provide. We loved the natural feel and look of Spotted Gum Timber, which added warmth to our home.
Following installation, the #1 Decks team oiled the timber which looked fantastic. Darren and his team were great to deal with”.
Another talented company achieving the Modern Coastal Vibe mission for the home was Reece Wellington of U-Neek Interior Solutions.
Reece built the joinery at the Yowie Bay property, including the alfresco area, TV units inside the home, study and even a mud room for dirty shoes. Of owner Anna he says:
“Anna has a passion for interior design, so we received clear direction on finishes from her. She was perfect with her selections and execution” says Reece.
For the carcass materials Reece used “Corelite” which is impervious to water and weathering, along with Tricoya for all doors and drawer fronts which were finished in a Satin Polyurethane Paint finish to both faces along with “V” Groove detail.
Darren of #1 Decks likes Reece’s choice for the joinery materials.
Timber Selection for Decking
Darren from #1 Decks says “As far as decking goes, timber is still my favourite choice if you are prepared to oil it and keep it looking like new. However it’s important to ensure you select the right timber to suit your environment. For this project, it was clear that Spotted Gum was the right choice for Anna’s vision. The result is stunning”.
“For clients who enjoy less maintenance, choosing composite will keep the deck looking like new without the effort”.
