This Deck is Smokin’ – Be Inspired By Matt Moran’s Rooftop Deck

#1 Decks recently installed the outdoor decking in Matt Moran’s Sydney Restaurants Smoke, a stunning rooftop bar with an outlook over the city and water’s edge, and the restaurant beneath known as ‘Bea’.

These stunning restaurants, both located at Barangaroo House in Sydney, are part of an award winning structure that incorporates the beauty of nature, with the outside clad in charcoaled timber, and a stunning explosion of greenery across three levels.

The deck at Barangaroo House is equally suited to residential projects. There are many long-lasting, quality products you can choose from to achieve this look, including both timber and composite options. Photo thanks to Cole Bennetts and Barangaroo House.

The Project

#1 Decks built 340 sqm of outdoor deck using Tallowood, which is a eucalypt wood native to NSW and Queensland. It is a highly durable and dense timber, which is resistant to decay due to its ability to withstand damp and wet conditions well.

The job was complex in accommodating the curved walls around the perimeter and had tight timeframes with many tradespeople working concurrently to complete the restaurant in time for Christmas.

The Subframe

The subframe was built from Outdure QwickBuild Framing System which is a revolutionary aluminium subframe ideal for low height decks over waterproof membranes.

The Timber Decking Chosen

Tallowood 60mm decking was selected by the builder, Calida Projects.

We pre-oiled the boards prior to installation, ensuring moisture would not affect the boards from underneath. This, combined with the aluminium subframe, ensures longevity of the deck.

Non-Slip Surface

We were able to achieve a P4 Non-Slip Rating, the highest rating available, by using an eco crystal protective coating. This commercial grade product is also an excellent choice for residential projects, especially around pool areas.

Would you like a stunning outdoor deck in your home?

Tallowood was chosen for Barangaroo House as it is beautiful and durable wood. We have many other natural timber options that can achieve an equally impressive silhouette and also, an abundance of long-lasting highly durable and attractive composite products, which have become incredibly popular in recent years.
